VET 111 - Veterinary Nursing Procedures II

3 Credits, 4 Contact Hours
2 lecture periods 2 lab periods

Continuation of VET 110  with an emphasis on venipuncture, catherization, fluid therapy and basic dental care procedures. Includes complete physical examinations, wound management, CPR and first aid.

Prerequisite(s): Within the last two years: C or better in VET 100 , VET 110 , VET 130 , and VET 225 .
Corequisite(s): VET 120 , VET 131 , VET 150  


Course Learning Outcomes
  1. Proficiency in performing venipuncture for treatment delivery or blood sampling.
  2. Proficiency in performing the placement of peripheral intravenous venous catheters.
  3. Demonstrate the set-up, types of delivery and maintenance of fluid therapy.
  4. Proficiency in application and removal of bandages and splints.
  5. Complete aspects of small animal dental prophylaxis.
  6. Compare and be signed off on performing the different forms of urine sample collection in small animal species.
  7. Execute the protocols to intervene in emergency interventions.
  8. Discuss the aspects of care for hospitalized and recumbent patients.
  9. Appraise the status of wounds and apply or instruct in interventions to enhance wound or abscess healing.

Performance Objectives:
  1. Perform venipuncture for treatment or blood sampling.

  3. Perform Fluid Therapy
    1. Maintain catheter placement
    2. Determine and maintain correct rate
  4. Apply and Remove Bandages and Splints

  5. Perform Small Animal Dental Prophylaxis

    1. Catheterize male and female dogs
    2. Collect voided urine samples of dogs and cats
    3. Perform cystocentesis of cats
  7. Apply Established Emergency Protocols
    1. Maintain emergency medical supplies
    2. Perform first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation
    3. Use ambu-bag
    4. Apply emergency splints and bandages
