VET 112IN - Veterinary Nursing Procedures 5 Credits, 9 Contact Hours 3 lecture periods 6 lab periods Introduction to veterinary nursing techniques. Includes physical examination, history taking, injections, venipuncture, catherization, fluid therapy, CPR, wound management, first aid, preventative health care, basic nutrition, and animal restraint. Also includes husbandry techniques, kennel management, and sanitation of kennel facilities for dogs and cats.
Prerequisite(s): Within the last two years: VET 100 Corequisite(s): VET 115IN Information: Admission to the Veterinary Technology program is required before enrolling in this course.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate proficiency and understanding of all elements of a physical exam, handling and restraint.
- Utilize standards in patient identification based on systems for various species.
- Proficiency in performing venipuncture and placement of intravenous venous catheters.
- Execute the protocols to intervene in emergency situations including bandaging and wound care.
- Discuss the aspects of care for hospitalized and recumbent patients, including fluid therapy.
Performance Objectives:
- Determine and know normal values of temperature, pulse, and respiration for dogs and cats.
- Restrain animal patients.
- Perform auscultation of the heart and lungs using a stethoscope.
- Administer parenteral injections.
- Administer oral medications.
- Perform therapeutic bathing, basic grooming, and dipping of small animals.
- Provide routine record keeping, care, and observation of hospitalized patients.
- Implement patient and personnel safety measures.
- Prepare feed and prescription diets.
- Clean and disinfect cages and kennels.
- Trim nail on dogs and cats.
- Express canine anal sacs.
- Clean and medicate ears of dogs and cats.
