VET 106 - Veterinary Practice Assistant I 3 Credits, 4 Contact Hours 2 lecture periods 2 lab periods
Introduction to the basic skills needed to assist veterinary professionals in the quality care of animals. Includes animal restraint, nursing, vaccinations and other basic assisting skills.
Corequisite(s): VET 107 , VET 108 Information: Consent of program faculty is required before enrolling in this course.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Properly restrain patients for veterinary personnel.
- Perform basic procedures involving companion animals.
- Explain safety in the veterinary facility.
- Assist with basic nursing procedures involving companion animals.
- Assist with vaccination of companion animals.

- Examination Room Procedures
- Restrain patients
- Small animals
- Place and remove small animals from cages
- Place and restrain small animals on tables
- Apply dog and cat safety muzzle
- Apply elizabethan collar
- Apply restrain pole
- Restrain birds and exotics – optional
- Large animals
- Halter, tie and lead horses and cattle
- Restrain cattle and horses
- Apply twitch
- Apply nose tongs/leads
- Restrain sheep and swine
- Load large animals
- Basic procedures
- Determine and record temperature, pulse, respiration and weight of pets
- Trim nails (dogs, cats and birds)
- Express anal sacs using the external method
- Identify external parasites: mites, lice, fleas, ticks
- Recognize common dog and cat breeds
- Bathe and groom animals
- Be familiar with small animal nutritional requirements
- Small Animal Nursing (Large Animal Nursing – Optional)
- Safety concerns
- Demonstrate knowledge of basic normal and abnormal behavior
- Utilize patient and personnel safety measures
- Identify potential zoonotic diseases
- Describe isolation procedures
- Describe hazardous waste disposal
- Describe basic sanitation
- Animal care
- Provide routine record-keeping and observation of hospitalized patients (i.e. Stress importance of notations made when cleaning and feeding)
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of common diseases and medical conditions
- Monitor/restrain patients for fluid therapy and record observations
- Hand pilling (dog, cat)
- Apply and remove bandages to healthy animals (equine leg and tail wraps optional)
- Perform therapeutic bathing, basic grooming and dipping of small animals
- Clean external ear canals
- Prepare food and prescription diets – be aware of any special dietary needs
- Clean and disinfect cages and kennels (stalls optional)
- Provide care and maintenance of nursing equipment
- Vaccinations
- Reconstitute vaccines and be familiar with proper protocols
- Describe possible routes and methods of drug and vaccine administration that the veterinarian or veterinary technician may choose
