SSE 224 - Substance Use Disorders Diverse & Special Needs Populations

3 Credits, 3 Contact Hours

Examination of and focus on understanding racial and ethnic differences in the prevalence of substance use disorders. Includes culture and substance use disorders, ethnic and racial groups, profiles of special populations, differences, cultural elements and relationships, dynamic factors, common terminology, counseling, and counseling theories.



Course Learning Outcomes
1.       Identify cultural factors that affect substance use disorders among Native Americans in the United States

          including helpful and unhelpful health care practices, culturally sensitive treatment and prevention efforts,

          community resources, and efforts to advocate for the needs of this population.  (Council on Social Work

          Education [CSWE] Competencies 2, 3, 4 and 5)

2.       Identify cultural factors that affect substance use disorders among African Americans and Multi-cultural

          Americans in the United States, including helpful and unhelpful health care practices, culturally sensitive

          treatment and prevention efforts, community resources, and efforts to advocate for the needs of these

          populations. (CSWE Competencies 2, 3, 4 and 5)

3.       Identify cultural factors that affect substance use disorders among Asian Americans and Hispanic     Americans in the United States, including helpful and unhelpful health care practices, culturally sensitive treatment and prevention efforts, community resources, and efforts to advocate for the needs of these populations.  (CSWE Competencies 2, 3, 4 and 5)

4.       Analyze a special population (mobility impaired, visually impaired, learning disabled, mentally disabled,

          emotionally handicapped, LGBTQ, females, older adults) in terms of substance use disorders among that

          population, including statistics of use and abuse, barriers to intervention, appropriate treatment and    prevention efforts.  (CSWE Competencies 2, 3, 4 and 5)

5.       Describe the functioning of a local substance use disorders recovery group, including group interaction, an

          overall assessment of the effectiveness of the meeting experience, and an analysis of its potential for helping diverse and special populations.  (CSWE Competencies 1, 2 and 6)


Performance Objectives:
  1. Identify racial, ethnic, and special populations and the prevalence of substance use disorders.
  2. Describe the profiles of African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, Multiracial Americans, and Native Americans.
  3. Differentiate and demonstrate appropriate counseling methodologies in relationship to people of color, prejudice, racism, discrimination, stereotypes, including the disabled, and people of different sexual orientations.
  4. Identify the effect of various individual differences in a multicultural context and explain ethnic, cultural, racial, sexual, and physical differences.
  5. Utilize common terminology in multicultural counseling of substance use disorders.
  6. Describe profiles of the learning impaired, mobility impaired, visually impaired, learning disabled, mentally disabled, emotionally handicapped, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) population, females, and older adults.
  7. Integrate culture in counseling diverse and special needs clients.
  8. Specify the distinguishing characteristics of multicultural counseling theories.
  9. Explain dynamic factors and their impact on substance use disorders in diverse and special needs populations.
