PHT 175IN - Pharmacy Operations

6 Contact Hours, 4 Credits
3 lecture periods 3 lab periods


An integrated course combining lecture and laboratory exercise in practical, technical, and legal aspects of drug management; distribution (dispensing); and storage in outpatient (retail), inpatient (hospital), and nursing home settings. Includes pharmacy equipment and devices, concepts related to computer operations, materials, non-sterile dosage forms, and inventory control. Also includes small or large scale compounding, packaging and quality control; practical aspects of recordkeeping, and insurance issues relevant to the daily pharmacy.

Prerequisite(s): PHT 170  and PHT 171IN  or concurrent enrollment.

Course Learning Outcomes
  1. Prepare patient prescriptions accurately, following a physician’s order.
  2. Repackage and label unit-doses from a bulk supply of drugs and correctly complete all necessary control records.
  3. Identify proper procedures for assisting the pharmacist in preparing, storing and distributing investigational drug products.
  4. Describe the social significance of the computer and ethical issues with computers.
  5. Identify the physical components of a computer system.
  6. Enter and retrieve data in spreadsheets.
  7. Use word processing to compose, file and retrieve documents.
  8. Use a pharmacy software system to maintain patient profiles and perform pharmacy database functions.

Performance Objectives:
  1. Perform the following functions for processing ambulatory patient prescriptions:
    1. Correctly type the label.
    2. Select the proper drug from the dispensing stock.
    3. Accurately count or measure the product and place in the proper container. 
    4. Complete the necessary records and documents.
    5. Submit to confirmatory inspection.
    6. Calculate the charge for the prescription.
  2. Compound solutions, suspensions, creams, ointments, suppositories, and troches to physicians’ prescription specifications, demonstrating proper weighing procedures, calculations, drug selection and correct labeling procedures.
  3. Analyze prescriptions or medication orders for completeness, accuracy, authenticity, legality, and reimbursement eligibility.
  4. Describe dispensing and record-keeping procedures.
  5. State the precautions and procedures that must be used in handling caustic, poisonous, and flammable substances.
  6. Demonstrate proper aseptic technique to assist the pharmacist in the administration of immunizations.
  7. State proper procedures for inventory control of medications, equipment and other pharmacy devices.
  8. Identify situations when refills and renewals need to be reviewed by the pharmacist.
  9. Follow established practices to receiving items.
