AUT 126 - Engine Performance and Driveability Troubleshooting 3 Credits, 7 Contact Hours 1 lecture period 6 lab periods Diagnosis and repair of On-board Diagnostics Generation One (OBDI) and Two (OBDII) systems. Includes personal and environmental safety, general engine, computerized engine controls, ignition system, fuel, air induction, and exhaust systems, emissions control systems, and engine related service.
Prerequisite(s): AUT 128
Course Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge of the 3 major systems of engine drivability.
- Demonstrate knowledge of engine mechanical systems and perform diagnosis on them.
- Demonstrate knowledge of fuel injection systems and perform diagnosis on them.
- Demonstrate knowledge of ignition systems and perform diagnosis on them.
- Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency with the Snap-On Verus Pro Scanner and service and obtain an NC3 certification.
- Demonstrate knowledge of engine emission systems and perform diagnosis on them.
- Demonstrate knowledge on forced induction systems and perform diagnosis on them.

- Locate and interpret vehicle and component identification numbers
- Inspect engine assemble for fuel, oil, coolant and other fluid leaks
- Diagnose abnormal engine noise or vibrations
- Diagnose abnormal exhaust color, odor and sound
- Perform engine vacuum and boost pressure tests
- Perform engine power balance test
- Perform cylinder cranking compression tests
- Perform engine running compression test
- Perform cylinder leakage test
- Diagnose engine mechanical, electrical and fuel concerns with diagnostic equipment
- Utilize 4 or 5 gas analyzer to obtain exhaust readings and interpret data
- Verify engine operating temperature

- Retrieve, record and clear stored OBD I diagnostic trouble codes
- Retrieve, record and clear stored OBD II diagnostic trouble codes
- Diagnose emissions or driveabilty concerns with trouble codes present

- Check for module communication errors using a scanner
- Inspect and test sensors, actuators, controls modules and circuits with a graphing multimeter
- Obtain and interpret scan tool data
- Access and use service information to perform a step by step diagnosis
- Diagnose driveability and emissions problems due to accessory interactions
- Perform active tests of actuators using a scan tool

- Diagnose engine misfire, poor mileage, and emissions problems
- Check fuel for contaminants and quality
- Inspect and test fuel pump systems for pressure, regulation and volume

- Inspect air induction system for vacuum leaks (unmetered air)

- Inspect and test Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) systems
- Diagnose emissions and driveability problems due to Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system Failures
- Inspect and test Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system mechanical controls
- Inspect and test EGR system electrical sensors, controls and wiring
- Diagnose problems in the secondary air injection and catalytic converter systems
- Diagnose malfunctions in the Evaporation Emissions (EVAP) systems
- Interpret EVAP Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)

- Adjust engine mechanical or hydraulic valves
- Remove and replace timing belt and verify camshaft timing
- Remove and replace thermostat and gasket
- Inspect and test engine mechanical and electrical fans systems
- Perform fastener thread repairs, including removing broken bolts and installing inserts
- Perform oil and filter change
- Identify hybrid engine service precautions
