An introduction to operations of the legal system and the practical application of law to the hospitality industry. Includes a case study approach to understanding restaurant, hotel, and travel laws and regulations that influence business and management decisions in the hospitality industry.
Prerequisite(s): HRM 100
Course Learning Outcomes
- Explain key federal labor and employment laws and their effect upon hospitality organizations.
- Describe the components of equitable wages and benefits.
- Identify specific examples of hospitality legalities, with relevant exercises and application to real-world hospitality management situations.
- Outline the various responsibilities of hospitality businesses
Performance Objectives:
- Learn proper Communication Skills between managers and innkeepers to effectively manage their legal environment.
- Understand equitable wages and benefits program for a unit in a hospitality organization.
- Discuss key federal labor and employment laws and their effect upon hospitality organizations.
- Go through scenarios of how your actions are viewed in a legal context.
- Work through specific examples of hospitality legalities, with relevant exercises and application to real-world hospitality management situations.
- Discuss a wide array of hospitality laws including contracts, anti-trust, torts, real estate, etc. and how these laws govern the various nuances of the hotel, restaurant, bar, spa, country club, meeting, and convention industries
- Learn components of Statutes vs. Constitution, Statutes vs. common law, and identify the legal fundamentals of hospitality law.
