UDLT 102 - Dental Morphology, Occlusion & Articulation Students will develop an overarching knowledge of human dental morphology to include anatomical landmarks, terminology, tooth numbering systems and tooth development, introduction to human mandibular movement through the examination of the interrelation of skeletal and muscular systems, tooth surfaces and the temporomandibular joints. Also includes types of cusps with their interrelation to the opposing dentition, examination of the centric relation and vertical dimension in edentulous patients, types of dental articulator and comparisons of normal occlusion and various malocclusions i.e. Angle’s Classification.
Course Learning Outcomes:
- Locate, identify, and describe anatomical landmarks of the teeth and oral cavity on both analogue and digital models.
- Identify and explain basic terminology.
- Locate, identify, and describe basic anatomical landmarks of the teeth, permanent dentition, and deciduous (primary) dentition.
- Detail the location and function of head and neck skeletal structures and musculature.
- Enumerate oral structures and related physiology.
- Sculpt teeth #3-8 maxillary and #19-22 mandibular in soap, wax, or gypsum.
- Describe dental anatomy and morphology as it relates to occlusion and mastication.
- Describe elements Angle’s Classification of occlusion
- Describe mandibular movements as they relate to mastication
- Identify various types of cusps & cusp fossa relationships
- Describe how the dentist establishes centric relation and vertical dimension in the edentulous patients.
- Comparison review of dental articulators
- Explain how patient information is moved to and approximated with a dental articulator
