VET 130 - Animal Anatomy and Physiology I

4 Credits, 6 Contact Hours
3 lecture periods 3 lab periods

Anatomy and physiology of domestic animals. Includes the study of body systems such as skeletal, muscular, integumentary, special sense organs, circulatory and digestive. Also includes principles of disease.

Prerequisite(s): Within the last eight years with a C or better: BIO 156IN  or BIO 181IN  (or required score on BIO Challenge Exam), and CHM 130IN  or CHM 151IN  (or score of 34 or higher on the CHM 130 Challenge Exam.)
Corequisite(s): VET 100 , VET 110 , VET 225  
Information: Admission to Veterinary Technology program is required before enrolling in this course.


Course Learning Outcomes
  1. Interpret and use anatomic and physiologic terminology.
  2. Classify the composition of the integumentary system and differentiate common gross patterns of skin disease states.
  3. Classify bone tissue types, identify individual bones, explain joint types and function, and differentiate common gross patterns of orthopedic disease states.
  4. Classify muscle tissue types, identify individual muscle groups, explain neuromuscular function, identify major tendons, ligaments, bursa and fascia, and differentiate common gross patterns of muscle disease states.
  5. Classify composition of circulating blood and explain hematopoetic generation.
  6. Compare the different dental structures, tooth composition and oral health concerns among various common domestic species.
  7. Classify the structures of the heart, circulation pattern through the heart, circulatory pattern through the body, the nomenclature of main vessels and differentiate common cardiovascular disease processes.
  8. Classify respiratory tissue types, identify individual lung lobes, explain gas exchange and respiratory system functions, and differentiate common gross patterns of respiratory disease states.
  9. Classify digestive organ tissue types, identify individual component parts or organs, explain component digestive functions, identify neural and hormonal regulations of digestive functions and differentiate common gross patterns of digestive, hepatic, splenic and pancreatic disease states.

  8. Describe the digestive functions of the pancreas and liver.
  9. Describe neural and hormonal regulation of the digestive system.

  12. List dental disorders and terminology.
  13. List functions of the skeletal system.
