SSE 123 - Prevention of Substance Use Disorders

Comprehensive review of approaches to prevention of substance use disorders. Includes principles of prevention; risk factors, protective factors, resilience; and systems-oriented and client-oriented prevention strategies. Also includes controversial prevention issues, client-oriented prevention programs and funding, the role of media and social marketing, law enforcement and regulatory agencies, special populations, prevention in the workplace, and program evaluation.

2.    Identify community based prevention strategies, the impact of media and social marketing, prevention

       across the lifespan, and prevention with special populations and groups.  (CSWE Competencies 4

       and 5)

3.    Identify prevention strategies in the workplace, drug free workplace programs, drug testing, and the

       role of law enforcement and regulatory agencies in prevention efforts.  (CSWE Competencies 4 and

       5)

4.    Describe a local or national prevention program for substance use disorders, including the type of

       prevention, the history of the program, the population targeted, staffing of the program, and funding of

       the program.  (CSWE Competencies 4 and 5)

5.    Apply the concepts and strategies of the prevention of substance use disorders to the individual,

       family, community, and workplace.  (CSWE Competencies 7 and 9)

2. Describe the historical development of the prevention of substance use disorders.
3. Identify the criteria for addiction and be familiar with the various treatment approaches.
4. Understand the criteria for development and evaluation of a prevention program.

6. Describe the role of law enforcement and regulatory agencies in prevention efforts.
7. Discuss the importance of the advertising industry and mass media with respect to prevention.
8. Explain the prevention strategies/programs for special populations.
9. Discuss the pros and cons of drug testing.
10. Describe contemporary issues of legalizing/decriminalizing substance use.
