DHE 101LC - Dental Hygiene I Clinical 12 Contact Hours, 3 Credits 0 lecture periods 12 lab periods
This is the clinical lab portion of DHE 101 . Introduction to the procedures used in the pre-clinical practice of dental hygiene at the beginning level. Includes professionalism and ethics, infection control, body mechanics/ergonomics, evaluation of patient medical and dental history, and assessment data. Also includes instrumentation, and laboratory practice of dental hygiene procedures on student partners (e.g. removal of soft deposits, fluorides, various clinical procedures)
Information: Students must be admitted to the PCC Dental Hygiene program and obtain consent of the Dental Hygiene department before enrolling in this course.

Course Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate honest and ethical behavior in a professional setting by maintaining confidentiality of patient records in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
- Perform infection control procedures consistent with the DHE program and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines.
- Perform clinical skill demonstration, including proper instrumentation, successfully for assigned activities and entry level clinical skills assessment.
Performance Objectives:
- Identify risk reduction methods in dental hygiene and maintain an aseptic environment following CDC protocols.
- Demonstrate proper handwashing, gloving, and instrument sterilization procedures.
- Position patients for optimal comfort, evaluate medical histories, and assess treatment contraindications.
- Practice and record accurate vital signs and recognize standard ranges.
- Conduct and document hard and soft tissue exams and identify restorations.
- Use correct grasps, fulcrum, and finger-rest techniques for instrument control, including proper calculus removal angles.
- Demonstrate mirror techniques for retraction, illumination, and indirect vision.
- Practice periodontal probing and exploratory strokes on typodonts and partners.
- Demonstrate use of universal curettes, sickle scalers, and Gracey curettes across all mouth areas.
- Explain and perform coronal and selective polishing, apply disclosing agents, and evaluate for soft deposits.
- Demonstrate fluoride varnish application, develop comprehensive treatment plans, and document services rendered.
- Apply evidence-based decision-making, integrating lab and classroom knowledge for patient care.
- Understand patient rights and responsibilities throughout clinical interactions.
