HRP 103 - Basic Health Professions Skills

5 Contact Hours, 3 Credits
2 lecture periods 3 lab periods


Designed to provide students with a hands-on introduction to fundamental client care skills and competencies essential for success in various health professions. Includes a practical foundation for students aspiring to enter healthcare programs, such as nursing, medical assisting, or allied health. Also includes interactive learning experiences and practical exercises, basic client care skills, safety protocols, and communication techniques crucial for entry-level healthcare practice.

Course Learning Outcomes
  1. Demonstrate proficiency in fundamental clinical skills, including vital signs measurement, infection control practices, basic patient assessment, and first aid principles.
  2. Apply safety protocols in healthcare settings, including identifying and mitigating potential safety hazards.
  3. Gain hands-on experience in using healthcare technology, including Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and diagnostic equipment.
  4. Demonstrate behaviors consistent with care standards for healthcare professionals.
  5. Maintain Healthcare Provider CPR. 

Performance Objectives:
  1. Recognize emergencies. (Patient assessment, triage etc.)
  2. Operate emergency equipment.
  3. Administer first aid and Healthcare Provider CPR
  4. Implement an emergency procedures preparation plan in a healthcare setting.
  5. Demonstrate how and where to apply pressure to control bleeding, depending on the site.
  6. Demonstrate how to clean and dress a wound and apply the appropriate bandage for the site.
  7. List the signs and symptoms of shock.
  8. Perform various methods of transportation utilizing proper body mechanics.
  9. Demonstrate procedures for immobilizing a fracture and applying a sling and splint.
  10. Identify diabetic emergencies and state the appropriate treatment.
  11. Perform and demonstrate hot and cold emergencies and state the appropriate treatment applications.
  12. Identify the types of burns and the appropriate treatment for each type. Explain the Rule of Nine.
  13. Cite the procedure for treating different types of poisonings.
  14. Explain the procedure for monitoring a seizure patient.
  15. Perform all skills according to OSHA guidelines and standard precautions.
