HIT 101 - Introduction to ICD Coding

3.5 Contact Hours, 2.5 Credits
2 lecture periods 1.5 lab periods


Introduction to principles and application of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding system. Includes overview of coding, coding ethics, coding conventions, coding guidelines, hospital inpatient diagnosis, and procedure coding, outpatient and physician office diagnosis coding and procedure coding, and overview of HCPCS.

Recommendation: HIT 105  and BIO 160IN . If any recommended course is taken, see a financial aid or Veteran’s Affairs advisor to determine funding eligibility as appropriate.

Course Learning Outcomes
  1. Apply principles of classification systems, nomenclatures, and vocabularies.
  2. Explain the organization of the ICD-10-CM/PCS tabular lists, indices, tables, and guidelines.
  3. Assign ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes according to current guidelines.
  4. Describe ethical standards of practice in the medical coding career.

  1. Discuss the overview of coding; career opportunities, professional organizations, classification systems, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  2. Explain principles of ethics.
  3. Explain the principles and components of the ICD-10-CM/PCS classification system.
  4. Discuss the use of the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting
  5. Explain ICD-10-CM coding conventions
  6. Apply the steps to coding.
  7. Explain the ICD-10-PCS coding conventions.
  8. Apply codes to ICD-10-CM/PCS hospital inpatient coding and reporting.
  9. Apply codes ICD-10-CM/PCS outpatient and physician office coding and reporting.
  10. Describe the principles of HCPCS; assign procedure and service codes and claims.
