DHE 213 - Advanced Periodontal Services

2 Contact Hours, 2 Credits
2 lecture periods 0 lab periods


Application of Dental Hygiene skills on advanced periodontal patients. Includes periodontal exam and initial phase, treatment plan, periodontal classifications, plaque control, scaling and root planning indications and limitations, sonic and ultrasonic therapy in periodontal services, hand and powered instrumentation, and implant maintenance. Also includes occlusal evaluation and adjustment, assessment, reevaluation of treatment and maintenance, periodontal healing, antimicrobials and antibiotics, surgical procedures, and nonsurgical periodontal therapy.

Information: Students must be admitted to the PCC Dental Hygiene program and obtain consent of the Dental Hygiene department before enrolling in this course.

Course Learning Outcomes
  1. Assess key elements of a periodontal exam to develop accurate diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the AAP periodontal classifications to support diagnosis and treatment decisions.
  3. Recognize oral conditions that necessitate specific periodontal treatments, distinguishing between surgical and nonsurgical approaches.
  4. Develop tailored treatment and ongoing care plans that address the unique needs of each patient.
  5. Explain the biological processes involved in tissue formation and reattachment in periodontal care.

Performance Objectives:
  1. Evaluate the components of the periodontal examination and explain how they serve as diagnostic aids for therapeutic planning.
  2. Integrate, synthesize and evaluate an individualized dental hygiene treatment plan for the periodontal patient.
  3. Apply the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) periodontal classifications to patient cases.
  4. Explain oral conditions indicative for surgical and nonsurgical periodontal procedures.
  5. Describe the different types of periodontal surgical procedures and their purposes.
  6. Explain appropriate instrumentation techniques on patients with periodontal disease.
  7. Design and evaluate an individualized dental hygiene treatment  and maintenance plan.
  8. Describe the physiological process of the reattachment of periodontal tissues as well as the formation of new fiber attachment.
  9. Describe the use of lasers in dentistry, safety precautions and steps in apply lasers for bacterial reduction
  10. Identify the indications for use of antimicrobials, antibiotics and technologies used in periodontal therapy.
