Overview of oral pathology which is the study of human disease as found within all of the tissues represented in the area of the oral cavity. Includes introduction to pathology, diagnostic methods, normal exam and variants of normal, inflammation and repair, physical/chemical injuries of the oral tissues, and immunity and autoimmune diseases. Also includes infectious diseases, developmental disorders, neoplasia, genetic disorders, and oral manifestations of systemic disease.

Information: Students must be admitted to the PCC Dental Hygiene program and obtain consent of the Dental Hygiene department before enrolling in this course.

Course Learning Outcomes
  1. Utilize clinical, visual, and radiographic diagnostic methods to identify and document common and variant oral findings accurately.
  2. Summarize the processes of inflammation, immunity, and tissue repair in oral pathology
  3. Assess the etiology, pathogenesis, manifestations, symptoms, appropriate treatment and prognosis of infectious, developmental, and genetic disorders in the oral cavity.
  4. Describe the oral manifestations of systemic diseases and evaluate TMJ disorders.
  5. Apply the nomenclature to the diseases discussed in order to communicate effectively with dental and medical colleagues.

Performance Objectives:
  1. Recognize the benefit for thorough clinical and radiographic exams, recognizing normal anatomical variations and documenting findings accurately to support preliminary diagnoses.
  2. Describe the stages of inflammation, including microscopic events, systemic signs, and differences between acute and chronic inflammation, and identify types of tissue repair relevant to oral health.
  3. Assess the impact of common injuries, including traumatic dental injuries, on oral structures and identify appropriate management or referral needs.
  4. Recognize types of immunity and identify clinical signs of autoimmune diseases that may manifest in oral tissues.
  5. Classify bacterial, fungal, and viral infections affecting the oral cavity, including periodontal diseases.
  6. Distinguish between types of developmental cysts, odontogenic and nonodontogenic cysts, and inherited disorders impacting soft tissue, tooth and facial structures.
  7. Differentiate between benign and malignant tumors, including squamous cell carcinoma and odontogenic tumors, and recognize the importance of early detection and referral.
  8. Identify non-neoplastic bone diseases and their oral manifestations
  9. Identify how systemic diseases present within the oral cavity.
  10. Recognize common presentations of orofacial pain and TMJ disorders, assessing symptoms to support appropriate management or referral.
