DHE 119 - Periodontology 2 Contact Hours, 2 Credits 2 lecture periods 0 lab periods
Survey of periodontology comprised of the etiology, diagnosis, and prognosis of periodontal disease. Includes tissues and microscopic anatomy of the periodontium, historical background, causes, microbiology and classification of periodontal disease, local and systemic contributing factors, clinical assessment, radiographic analysis, and evidence-based periodontal care. Also includes decision making during treatment planning, nonsurgical and patient’s role in periodontal therapy, maintenance therapy, research articles and applications, and new dental technology.
Information: Students must be admitted to the PCC Dental Hygiene program and obtain consent of the Dental Hygiene department before enrolling in this course.

Course Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of periodontal anatomy and physiology
- Apply periodontal classification systems to assess periodontal health and disease progression
- Explain the role of plaque biofilm and host immune response in periodontal disease
- Evaluate patient-specific risk factors and develop individualized treatment plans .
- Incorporate evidence-based practices in periodontal care and maintenance
Performance Objectives:
- Explain the nerve, blood, and lymphatic supply of the periodontium and recognize the microscopic anatomy of gingiva, root cementum, and alveolar bone.
- Utilize the AAP classification and epidemiological research to assess periodontal health and identify varying types and stages of periodontal diseases.
- Describe the structure, colonization, and control of plaque biofilm, identifying bacteria associated with periodontal health and pathogenic biofilm in disease progression.
- Describe the host’s immune response to periodontal pathogens and explain the inflammatory processes that contribute to periodontal tissue destruction.
- Recognize local factors that affect plaque retention and pathogenicity and describe systemic and genetic risk factors, including medications, that can influence periodontal health.
- Distinguish between plaque-induced and non-plaque-induced gingival diseases, chronic and aggressive periodontitis, and necrotizing periodontal diseases.
- Assess clinical periodontal exam data and interpret radiographic images to assess periodontal conditions and identify necessary treatment interventions.
- Use clinically relevant information to make informed treatment decisions, including diagnosis assignment, treatment sequencing, and obtaining informed consent.
- Assess nonsurgical periodontal therapy techniques, assess the outcomes of nonsurgical therapy, and develop patient education on effective self-care methods for periodontal health.
- Develop individualized maintenance plans for periodontal maintenance therapy.
- Analyze comprehensive case studies and research articles to enhance understanding of periodontal treatment approaches and best practices.
