MUS 109 - Pima Jazz Band II 1 Credits, 3 Contact Hours 0 lecture periods 3 lab periods
Continuation of MUS 108 . Includes interpretation of jazz literature and its notation, development of mind and body control, interpretation of jazz rhythms, scales, and ensemble techniques.
Prerequisite(s): MUS 108 Information: All interested students are welcome to register. Students will audition for placement within the ensemble. May be taken two times for a maximum of two credit hours. If this course is repeated, see a financial aid or Veteran’s Affairs advisor to determine funding eligibility as appropriate. Gen-Ed: Meets AGEC - FA; Meets - CTE - A&H.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate interpretative abilities of jazz literature and its notation.
- Perform modes melodically at a higher level.
- Demonstrate proper ensemble techniques: balance, intonation, principals, and timbres.
- Demonstrate intermediate improvisational skills in solo roles.

- Interpretation of Jazz Literature and its Notation
- Differences among jazz rhythms and their interpretations
- Interpretational approaches, primarily of the swing era
- The freedom/strictness of jazz rhythms
- Continued understanding through practice of proper tempi for musical styles
- Development of Mind and Body Control
- Mental intensity
- Technical control of one’s instrument(s)
- Interpretation of Different Jazz Rhythms Through Listening
- Scales
- Learning modes and how to apply them to chord progressions provided by the composer
- The art of playing what one hears through intervallic studies
- Ensemble Techniques
- The necessity of good group dynamics
- Individual and group intonation
- Good ensemble balance
