CIS 284 - Information Technology Capstone

1-3 Credits, 1.5-5.0 Contact Hours
.5-1 lecture periods 1-4 lab period

Capstone experience for the CyberSecurity and Networking/Cyber Defense Associates of Applied Science. Provides an opportunity to reflect on and integrate the knowledge gained from previous courses into a final hands-on project.

Information: This course should be taken within the final two semesters of the degree and requires an understanding of operating systems, networking, and cyber security.  Course activities may take place in a simulated work setting.

Course Learning Outcomes
  1. Develop a team-based project plan in the area of systems, networks, or security.
  2. Implement a technical project based on business requirements.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the system lifecycle.

Outline:
  1. Project Design & Research
    1. Identify an enterprise-level data center or security project.
    2. Determine business requirements for the project, including outcomes, stakeholders & budget.
    3. Determine technical, procedural, communication and training tasks to be completed.
    4. Work with team members to assign tasks and set timelines.
    5. Present project management plan.
  2. Project Implementation
    1. Communicate project status on a regular basis through status updates, documentation, and presentations.
    2. Work with other teams to ensure technical resources are available when needed.
    3. Develop documentation covering implementation and maintenance.
    4. Develop training materials for students who would be supporting the system in the future.
  3. Project Reporting
    1. Develop a final reflection report which includes an introspective summary of technical and non-technical experiences during the course.
    2. Deliver final presentation covering:
      1. Original scope and requirements
      2. Summary of the project implementation
      3. Changes to the scope or requirements
      4. Lessons learned during implementation
