AUT 133 - Automatic Transmission/Transaxle Service and Rebuilding 3 Credits, 7 Contact Hours 1 lecture period 6 lab periods
Principles and procedures for front- and rear-wheel drive automatic transmission overhaul. Includes personal and environmental safety, automatic transmission diagnosis and service, and transmission in-vehicle and off-vehicle repair.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate understanding of automatic transmission and transaxle operation
- Perform Pressure Testing and Diagnose Pressure Control Solenoids, Removal and Installation of a case connector
- Perform Overhaul Procedures for a FCA Transaxle.
- Perform Overhaul Procedures for a on a GM Automatic Transmission.
- Perform Overhaul Procedures for a FCA Automatic Transmission.
- Perform Overhaul Procedures for a Ford Automatic Transmission.
- Demonstrate the ability to locate Technical Service Information Transmission Overhaul Procedures for a Vehicle using ProDemand Software.
Outline:
- Personal and Environmental Safety
- Clothing and personal protection devices.
- Fire extinguishers location and use.
- Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) location and application.
- Transmission Repair (In-vehicle)
- Inspect, adjust or replace (as applicable) vacuum modulator; inspect and repair or replace lines and hoses.
- Inspect and replace external seals and gaskets.
- Inspect extension housing, bushings and seals; perform necessary action
- Inspect, leak test, flush, and replace cooler, lines, and fittings.
- Diagnose electronic transmission control systems using a scan tool; determine necessary action.
- Transmission Repair (Off-vehicle)
- Disassemble, clean, and inspect transmission.
- Inspect servo bore, piston, seals, pin, spring, and retainers; determine necessary action.
- Inspect accumulator bore, piston, seals, spring, and retainer; determine necessary action.
- Assemble automatic transmission.
- Inspect, measure, and reseal oil pump assembly and components.
- Gear Train, Shafts, Bushings and Case.
- Measure endplay or preload; determine necessary action.
- Inspect, measure, and replace thrust washers and bearings.
- Inspect oil delivery seal rings, ring grooves, and sealing surface areas.
- Friction and Reaction Units
- Inspect clutch drum, piston, check-balls, springs, retainers, seals, and friction and pressure plates; determine necessary action.
- Measure clutch pack clearance; determine necessary action.
- Air test operation of clutch and servo assemblies.
- Inspect roller and sprag clutch, races, rollers, sprags, springs, cages, and retainers; replace as needed.
- Inspect bands and drums; determine necessary action.
- Automatic Transmission Diagnosis and Service
- Identify and interpret transmission concern; assure proper engine operation; determine necessary action.
- Diagnose fluid usage, level, and condition concerns; determine necessary action
- Perform pressure tests; determine necessary action.
